New extensions in BS Contact support deferred rendering in real-time

The times of baked shadows and pre-rendered lighting effects in computer graphics have gone. Today advanced shading techniques are possible in BS Contact – in real-time.

Deferred rendering is a technique in which the result of a shading algorithm is calculated by dividing it into smaller parts that are written to intermediate buffer storage to be combined later, instead of immediately writing the shader result to the color framebuffer.

The BS Contact implementation on modern hardware makes use of multiple render targets (MRT) to avoid redundant vertex transformations. The computation and memory bandwidth required to shade a scene is reduced to those visible portions, thereby reducing the shaded depth complexity.

Recently Hong-Kong based company Legendtech pushes the limit of the new BS Contact extensions on their car racing game through a 1103 km2 3D-model of Hong Kong. The following screenshots of BS Contact show results of deferred lighting, screen space ambient occlusion(SSAO) and real-time reflection and refraction as well as motion blur and depth of field generated with post processing shaders.
